Quick answer
To measure whether your website appears in AI answers you have three routes: manually querying ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with your customers’ actual questions (free but manual), using Search Console and GA4 to detect impressions and visits from AI engines (partial but free), or paying for a tracking tool like Otterly, Peec AI or Profound ($29/month up to $500+/month). Always start with the free routes: they’re enough to know whether you have a problem.
The problem with almost every article on this topic is this: either they’re vendor promotions dressed as reviews of expensive tools, or they’re generic advice with no data. This guide is different. It has real prices verified in July 2026, what you can do for free, what’s worth paying for, and what’s marketing noise.
One data point to understand why this matters now, not two years from now: according to Otterly’s research (2026), 15% of all web traffic now comes from AI agents and bots, and ChatGPT generates 56% of AI-referred traffic, followed by Gemini at 18% and Perplexity at 8%. The needle has moved.
The 3 routes to measure your AI visibility
Manual querying (free, essential)
The route almost nobody recommends because it pays no commission, but it’s exactly where you should start. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and ask the same questions a potential customer would. Whether your brand shows up cited, with what phrasing, with what link, and against which competitors. In 30 minutes you have an honest diagnosis.
Google Search Console and GA4 (free, partial)
The picture is only half there, but it’s real. Search Console shows impressions and clicks from AI Overviews (when Google chooses to report them), and in GA4 you can detect visits coming from AI engines by filtering referrer. It doesn’t cover ChatGPT or Perplexity if the user doesn’t click, but it gives you a solid baseline on Google AI Overviews, which is the engine with the highest volume.
chat.openai.com, chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. In Search Console, watch the impressions chart from the moment AI Overviews rolled out in your country: if impressions rise and clicks don’t, AI is showing you but stealing the click.Dedicated tracking tools (paid)
They automate what you’d do by hand: they run your questions against AI engines on a recurring schedule, log mentions, benchmark against competitors, and give you an AI “share of voice” metric. The category exploded in 2026: options range from $29/month to $500+/month. The table below compares the ones worth it.

Metrics that actually matter (and which ones are noise)
Any tool will bombard you with dashboards. Here are the four metrics that count and the three you can ignore:
Appearance rate (share of voice)
Out of 100 questions relevant to your business, in how many you’re cited. It’s the equivalent of classic “ranking”. If you’re at 5-15%, there’s work to do; above 30% in your niche, you’re doing well.
Sources cited alongside you
Which sites AI pulls information from when it answers: your site, your LinkedIn, Reddit, an industry outlet. This tells you where you need to strengthen your external presence. We cover this in which websites appear most in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Real traffic from AI engines (GA4)
Visits with referrer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot. This is the metric that translates visibility into real business: no clicks, no conversion. Watch their conversion rate too, not just volume.
Context and accuracy of citations
Are they citing you well or badly? With correct data or made-up? If AI says “ALHOSTINGS charges €20/month” and that’s not true, you have a hallucination to correct with clearer content.
And what you can ignore:
“Sentiment” metrics (subjective and hard to act on), absolute rankings (AI doesn’t rank like Google), and any proprietary “AI score” the tool doesn’t explain how it calculates. If you can’t act on a metric, don’t watch it.
How often to measure
An important warning: AI visibility is far more volatile than Google rankings. The same question can give you different results depending on the day, the exact prompt or the model. So:
Manual (route 1): once a month is enough for a snapshot. If you’re about to make a big change to your site, measure before and after.
Analytics (route 2): weekly review of Search Console and GA4 as soon as you see movement; otherwise monthly.
Tool (route 3): tools do daily or weekly tracking automatically. Your job is to review the dashboard once a week, not every day. Chasing daily fluctuations wastes time.

Do you know if your site already appears in AI answers?
With SEO for AI (AEO) I set up your measurement system: I check which questions you appear in (and which you don’t), who you’re competing against, and what your site is missing so answer engines pick you.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI visibility be measured for free?
Yes, partially but usefully. You can manually query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with your customers’ real questions (30 minutes a month), and use Google Search Console and GA4 to detect AI Overviews impressions and visits with an AI referrer. For a freelancer or SME starting out, these two routes cover 90% of what you need to know.
Which measurement tool do you recommend for an SME?
It depends on the starting point. If you’ve never measured: first, the free routes (manual querying + GA4 + Search Console). If you already have and want to automate: Otterly.ai from $29/month (15 prompts) is the most accessible entry point, and Peec AI at €89/month is the best depth-to-price balance if you work more prompts.
How often should you measure?
Manual measurement, once a month is enough for a snapshot. Search Console and GA4, weekly review. Automated tools do daily tracking, but your review should be weekly at most: AI visibility is volatile, and chasing daily fluctuations wastes time without gaining actionable information.
Does Google Search Console show traffic from AI Overviews?
Partially. Google includes AI Overviews impressions in the performance report when it chooses to report them, but doesn’t explicitly label them as such or separate them from the rest. The indirect way to detect it is watching whether impressions rise sharply from the rollout date in your country while clicks don’t: that indicates you’re appearing, but AI is keeping the click.
How much traffic already comes from AI engines?
According to Otterly’s research (2026), 15% of global web traffic now comes from AI agents and bots. Of AI-referred traffic, ChatGPT generates 56%, Gemini 18% and Perplexity 8%. In B2B or professional sectors the numbers tend to be a bit higher; in e-commerce, a bit lower.
