What keyword stuffing is<\/h2>\n

It is the forced repetition of a term with the intent to rank rather than the intent to explain. Intent is the key: it is not a number of repetitions, it is that the text stops sounding like natural language.<\/p>\n

“If you’re looking for the best cheap shoes<\/strong>, we have cheap shoes<\/strong> in our online store. Buying cheap shoes<\/strong> has never been easier. Visit our cheap shoes<\/strong> store and take advantage of our deals on cheap shoes<\/strong>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Five repetitions across four sentences, and none of them adds new information. A reader leaves; a search engine reaches the same conclusion.<\/p>\n

How to tell if you are doing it without realising<\/h2>\n

This is where it shows up on ordinary business websites, with no bad intent behind it. Check these seven spots on your site:<\/p>\n

  1. The footer with city lists.<\/strong> “Web design Barcelona, web design Madrid, web design Valencia\u2026” repeated on every page. It is the most common case and Google cites it literally as an example.<\/li>\n
  2. Image alt text.<\/strong> Putting the same keyword in the alt attribute of all fifteen images on a page.<\/li>\n
  3. Blog tags.<\/strong> Creating a tag for every keyword variation produces archive pages that are nearly empty and repetitive.<\/li>\n
  4. Stacked titles.<\/strong> Formats such as “Plumber Barcelona | Emergency plumber Barcelona | 24h plumber Barcelona”.<\/li>\n
  5. Duplicated product descriptions.<\/strong> Copy pasted across hundreds of references, changing only the model name.<\/li>\n
  6. Unreviewed AI-written text.<\/strong> Ask a model for content “optimised for this keyword” and it tends to insert it mechanically into every paragraph.<\/li>\n
  7. Legacy content.<\/strong> Text written ten years ago under the SEO criteria of the time, never revisited since.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

    Quick test: read the paragraph out loud. If you would not say it that way to a client, there is too much repetition.<\/p>\n

    The keyword density myth<\/h2>\n

    You will read in plenty of places that the ideal density is between 1% and 2%. It is worth being blunt: Google has publicly stated that there is no ideal keyword density and that it is not a ranking factor<\/strong>. It is a figure inherited from SEO tools of fifteen years ago.<\/p>\n

    That does not make the number useless. It works as a symptom<\/em>, not a target: if measuring a text returns 5%, you do not have a density problem, you have a writing problem. But chasing a specific percentage leads you straight into the mistake you are trying to avoid, writing while watching a counter instead of watching the reader.<\/p>\n

    The same applies to so-called LSI Keywords<\/strong>. The concept has circulated around SEO blogs for years, but Google has repeatedly denied using anything resembling “LSI keywords”. What it does do is understand entities and semantic relationships<\/strong>: it recognises that “footwear”, “trainers” and “buy online” belong to the same topical field. The practical advice is the same (use varied, natural vocabulary), but the technical name is wrong and worth dropping.<\/p>\n

    A note on Panda and Penguin, which appear in almost every article on this subject: they were real updates, but both were folded into Google’s core algorithm in 2016<\/strong>. They are no longer filters that run periodically, so talking about “a Panda penalty” today does not describe what actually happens. Evaluation is continuous.<\/p>\n

    How to avoid it without losing rankings<\/h2>\n

    The usual fear is that removing repetitions will make the page less relevant. That does not happen if you do the following.<\/p>\n

    Place the keyword where it carries weight, not where it fills space<\/h3>\n

    Cover the topic, not the term<\/h3>\n

    Answering the real questions surrounding a search naturally produces the vocabulary Google expects to find. That is the foundation of semantic SEO.<\/p>\n

    Work with variations and long tail instead of repeating<\/h3>\n

    Each variation is a different search entry point. Repeating the same term five times gives you one opportunity; using five different phrasings gives you five. The detail is in what long tail keywords are<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Write first, optimise afterwards<\/h3>\n

    Draft the text the way you would explain it to a client, and only then check whether the keyword sits in the places that matter. Done the other way round, the text comes out stiff.<\/p>\n

    • The keyword goes from five appearances to one, placed where it makes sense.<\/li>\n
    • Terms from the same semantic field come in: footwear, affordable prices, discounts, models, styles.<\/li>\n
    • Every sentence adds new information, which is exactly what the original version was missing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      What to do if your site already has keyword stuffing<\/h2>\n

      First check Search Console, under Manual actions, for an active notice. If there is one, fix the content and request a review from there. If there is not, the job is calmer: there is no rush and no immediate risk.<\/p>\n

      Prioritise by what gets the most impressions, not by what is worst written. Rewrite the whole text rather than deleting individual repetitions, which tends to leave sentences broken. And if the problem sits in the footer or a template, fixing it once corrects the entire site at a stroke.<\/p>\n

      Then request reindexing of the corrected URLs and wait. Algorithmic recovery is not immediate: allow 4 to 8 weeks to see movement.<\/p>\n
